Kelvin

Colour is everywhere and major feature in our lives, from our homes to the clothes we wear. Colour trends are often inspired by nature and the world around us. Selecting the right colour in a design is crucial to the success of your design and how it is perceived. Kelvin, a book on colour usage, is a good place to start if you need some injections into your colour palette.

Visi Magazine Pt. 2

I am loving this "red" cover for the holiday issue of Visi magazine. If you ever want good insight to trends and South African design, this is the magazine to read! Available in English and Afrikaans. (Maybe it should be published in one of our other local languages too?) It would have been great if they could have hooked up with the (RED) campaign and donated part of their sales to help combat HIV/Aids in SA...Im full of ideas today, haha! OH! And the cover is Scratch n Sniff! Good idea!

Plascon Colour Awards 2007

Last year I traveled around South Africa presenting and briefing design students (mostly interior designers) with the Plascon Colour Awards. The brief was to conceptualize and design a new space or room in a home, office, warehouse, airport etc etc. The space designed should have highlighted the power of colour and how it changes moods and the space itself. The work was judged on its innovation, aesthetic, use of colour and functionality. I went through how to research trends, applying them to the project and how to use the colours effectively. Here is the winner (Conrad Stoffberg) top and the three runners up for the competition. Well done to Conrad Stoffberg!

Marie Palmgren

I have never really been into painting, I know that is a very broad statement to make but I would honestly prefer to go to a photographic exhibition rather than see a painters work. Sorry painters, but my opinion would be totally worthless anyway! Despite this fact I found Marie Palmgrens work very appealing, I think I would buy the mainly white piece if I could.

Laurina Paperina

I thought these drawings were a great way to start the morning. I had a good chuckle over the little pope matchbox. Isn't he cute? haha. Laurina Paperina.

Blackle

This is one of the best ideas for a search engine yet! It is called Blackle and is powered by Google. Whats its appeal you say? One thing, the background is black which saves you and the world from gobbling up too much power. Please set it as your homepage and help conserve power.

Fashion156 - Colour

Fashion 156 is full of explosive colour. From bright blues to neon greens and oranges. The clothing in the photo shoots might not really be my kinda style but Fashion156 is a site I keep going back to for inspiration and tips.

Postage Stamp design

One area of design which I think is definitely underrated is postage stamp design. I have always wondered about the process behind creating these tiny designs that cross borders and showcase a countries heritage to the world. I definitely prefer the odd shaped stamps like the circular stamps and triangular stamps. If you want to see numerous stamp designs just type "postage stamps" into google images.
